Keloids are raised, thickened areas of scar tissue that develop at the site of skin injury, extending beyond the original wound. They result from an overproduction of collagen during the healing process and can occur from various skin traumas, including cuts, burns, piercings, and surgical incisions. Keloids can affect anyone but are more common in individuals with darker skin tones and those with a genetic predisposition to this type of scarring.
