Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It presents as a painful, blistering rash that typically appears on one side of the body or face, following the distribution of a nerve. Shingles can cause severe pain, itching, and complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. Antiviral medications can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, while pain management strategies include analgesics and sometimes corticosteroids. Vaccination is available to reduce the risk of developing shingles.
