About Pityriasis Rosea

When a rash appears on your skin and you don't know where it came from, it can be worrisome. Our board-certified dermatologist at Summerlin Dermatology, Dr. Reuel Aspacio, understands your cause for concern. He provides skin consultations for common rashes, like pityriasis rosea, on a regular basis. The rash is preceded by an oval rash called “herald patch,” often mistaken as that of a ringworm,  then spreads on the chest, back, arms and legs.  This rash is slow to disappear even with treatment. We want you to come to our office and get the answers you are looking for by learning what type of rash you have and how to best treat it. Schedule an appointment in our Las Vegas, NV office at your earliest convenience.

Known Causes

A breakout of pityriasis rosea is a common rash we suspect is from a virus. No matter the cause, an accurate diagnosis is important because many skin conditions may look like pityriasis rosea, such as bacterial infections, fungal infections, psoriasis, and lichen planus to name a few.

Presenting Symptoms

Pityriasis rosea usually starts as an oval rash (called the “herald patch”). Unfortunately, it is often mistaken as a ringworm. Within a week or two, a small oval rash will start appearing on the skin of the trunk and extremities, sparing the face, palms, and soles of the feet. The rash typically does not itch or burn. Although the rash typically goes away (even without treatment) and discoloration dissipates in eight weeks, it is distressing for many not knowing what is wrong with their skin.

Treatment Options

After a physical examination by Dr. Aspacio, he will provide you with a detailed diagnosis and a treatment plan to follow to alleviate your symptoms or manage the rash. He may write you a prescription and/or offer you information for home remedies that may be applied to minimize your pityriasis rosea symptoms.
